How Much Does It Cost You to Smile?

A reminder for anyone waiting to feel okay before living.

"Somewhere along the way, I started treating myself like something I have to earn."

We learned way too early that everything has a price.

In a world that runs on transactions, nothing feels free anymore. Even the smallest things come with expectations. Give something, get something back.

And somehow, we started treating ourselves the same way.

Like we’re debts.

So we delay our happiness like it’s a payment we can’t afford yet.

Until the weekend.

Until we feel better.

Until the promotion finally comes.

Until we have more money.

Until we have clear skin.

Until we have a good hair day.

Until we feel like we belong.

Until we fix whatever is “wrong” with us.

Until… until… until.

We put ourselves on pause.

Not even a pause, more like buffering forever.

As if we have time like that.

Life moves fast. Actually, faster than we’re comfortable admitting. One minute you’re waiting for things to get better, the next you realize you’ve been waiting for years.

For what? A miracle? A version of life where everything finally aligns?

Meanwhile, a real smile costs less than the iced coffee you hesitate to buy after checking your bank app.

And still, we treat it like a luxury.

I’m not here talking about toxic positivity, I don't even have a positive bone in me to be quite frank with you, if anything, I'm here reminding myself.

I’m here to say: stop postponing yourself.

Go out alone. Yes, alone.

Go to that beach.

Sit in that café and feel awkward for ten minutes.

Join something new and hate it at first.

Walk around with unwashed hair if that’s the mood, don't delay it until you feel prettier.

Do it scared. Do it a bit off. Do it before you feel ready.

You might cringe later. You probably will.

You’ll replay it at night like “why did I do that?”

But it's just a useless self-awareness that will not help you in the long run.

And who cares at the end of the day, at least you did something.

Because life will still mess things up on a random Sunday for no reason.

(My hate of Sundays is kinda immature and personal, sorry lol)

That part doesn’t change.

So you might as well steal small moments of happiness in between.

Not the perfect kind. Not the aesthetic, planned, Instagram version.

The real kind. The slightly awkward, unfiltered kind.

The kind where you catch yourself smiling and don’t even know why.

That’s the one.

So really, how much does it cost you to smile?

And if it’s free… why do you keep acting like it isn’t?

Asset

This one cost me two oysters and a beach night view. Totally worth it.
